Last week, Diesel Presented…Only The Brave featuring legendary rapper and activist COMMON with bold new talents, BIG SEAN, DONNIS, and VADO, and very special guests including THE RAPTURE. Nipsey Hussle was on the bill but unfortunately couldn’t make the show. However, the show went on and it was hit! I met Ernest Estime a while back through our mutual friend Jabari. If I remember correctly, it was for The ILLZ’s album release party last December. Ever since then, I’ve bumped into Ernest at all types of events. While everyone is busy getting their free drinks in, Ernest focused on one thing… Getting the perfect shot. As a young photographer in the game, he’s not amateur. Ernest has been to several different major events world wide from Hot 97′s Summer Jam 10′ in Jersey to The BET Awards 10′ in LA. Acknowledging his hustle in the past year, I felt it was only right to have Ernest as our first Feature on “The SPOTLIGHT”. Ernest and I had a brief conversation for the record below, enjoy.

SPOTLIGHT

***Ernest, you’re a good friend to us at Good*Fella Media… But for those who don’t know please introduce yourself.
Hello ladies and gentlemen! My name is Ernest Estimé. I’m a pretty cool guy, photographer, music lover, New York City representative … whatever’s clever.

***How did you get into Photography and what/who are some of your influences?
I got into photography while living in Long Island about 3 years ago. I was a pretty popular nightclub promoter at the time and, I made the decision to start photographing the events I was apart of, with my point and shoot camera.

From there, my passion grew further more as my love for music blog’s started to become greater. Viewing the photo’s associated with each post always struck me and, inspired me to seriously consider it, a career choice.

I have a bevy of influences but, I would have to say more than anything else, Life inspires me more than anything.

***You’ve been in the game for only about a year but still have managed to get your brand out there. How so?
I honestly feel like I have a lot of work to do. A lot of people will probably see this as if, I’m pulling out a modesty card but, I really feel that I have to make more of an impact [with tactful pacing, of course].

With that said, I would say I got myself “out there” by being out there. Being kind, respectful and, credible is whats helping my name [brand] further ever-more.

Please explain your daily routines to better your craft. (Concepts, Preparation, Shooting, etc)
I’m always in deep, mysterious thoughts. I always view life in a metaphor. Walking throughout the streets of New York City, can inspire just about anyone [visually] but, it’s about what provokes your vision that will provoke others pretty much. I try my best to exude that with different perspectives, angles, shades, and coloring.

***In your opinion, what do you think is a great photographer?
One who’s work is constantly outdone with each new set he or she produces. Progression is big. Especially in this new age of technology and life.

***I noticed you’ve mastered the craft of “Performance/Event Photography” are you working on any other projects?

I’m getting into album art photography but I’m looking to take on several projects at the moment, actually. I really want to get a portrait project going on that I have in mind …

***What is the work you are most proud of? (Any Photo or Project in particular)?
I wish I can find just one photo or project to say I’m am super proud of solely but, I have been humbled and blessed to be apart of, and contribute to so many moments this year, that its way too difficult for me to name one.

***What is your purpose in life?
My purpose in life is to work hard, inspire people, and see the world through my eyes and my lens[es].

***I noticed you and heather (Herfection.com) are great friends. Please Explain your relationship with her and how she’s helped you branding yourself.
To be quite honest Heather and I began our friendship via the internet and my Flickr page. My photos being featured on her site was all based on the strength of my work. That is one thing that I am slightly proud of is that, things were never based off of the proverbial “he’s cool so I’ll let him rock” leniency for me. It was through my work and persistence that built that bond between her and I.

She actually thought I was a super internet geeky kid before meeting me face-to-face. She was right, ha!

Mixtape: Fashionably Late

Real Spit: Fresh off the plane, Konnichiwasnitches and peace to all our loved ones. Mixtape Daily goes international this week as we bring you one of the original candidates for “Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010″: Donnis.

Donnis, an Atlanta native, went back to a place where he really got started with his career, Japan (Yes, we’re stuntin’ on you right now from foreign terrain: D spoke to us from the Tokyo shop Swagger.). He served overseas in Japan, but while in the land of the rising sun, started to build up his rap rep, performing shows.

Obviously, it worked out for him. He’s on a strong come-up and recently put out his overdue but much-anticipated mixtape Fashionably Late.

“Fashionably Late because I been doing the music thing for quite some time,” he explained of the title. “I have a lot of friends that made it before me and popped off a little bit before my career started to really blossom. Using that term, I’m a little late to the party that they’re already at. So that’s what gave me the idea to name my mixtape Fashionably Late. Along with the fact that I’m fashionable and always late.”

“Tonight.” “It was produced by my homeboy T-Minus out of Toronto,” Donnis explained. “It’s a record I came up with. I was in L.A. for the 2010 Grammys. It was a lot of celebrities in the house. I wasn’t nominated for anything. It was my first time going to L.A. for the Grammys and it was an amazing experience. That experience made me want to go rush to the studio and make a record. That’s how the world gets this song, ‘Tonight.’ ”

“Yup.” “This was produced by my homeboy Needlez. It features a Rihanna sample from her record ‘Hard’ featuring Young Jeezy,” The Atlanta native detailed. “We sampled ‘yup, you know this.’ I was in the studio, and we had the idea of making this record because we thought it was such a strong line in that song. ['Yup'] is such a braggadocious song. I’m stuntin’ on all the other rappers in the game. Lettin’ them know I’m here and I’m ready to be the best out here.”

“Dream Chaser.” “It’s basically a record that I think everybody could relate to if you ever had a dream,” Don rationalized. “It’s a record that makes you want to get up, get out and do something. It came about by me wanting to be at a certain place in my career. It’s a record I wrote down in Atlanta, thinking things can be better than they are right now.”
