We at Good*Fella have a bunch of videos that have never been published. I have decided to release a few of these videos in the upcoming weeks. This particular one features Kendrick Lamar surprise performance at SOBs. If you noticed, not many people knew who he was yet. Great to see he’s hip hop’s favorite rapper grow so much in the past year.

We Stole the Show explains the dynamic of their Comedian/M.C. tandem and why they can be compared to “The Hood Jerry Lewis & Dean Martin”. They further discussed on how difficult it is to come up in the Buffalo rap scene and how they really didn’t like one another earlier stages of their partnership.

Bodega Bamz stopped by the Good*Fella Radio Show and clarified his affiliation with Smoke Dza & Jonny Shipes. He explains why Harlem is the “Mecca Jr.” and also talks about his latest project “The Sidewalk Exec,” along with how he convinced V Don to produce the entire project.

Brooklyn MC, Kris Kasanova stopped by to discuss how it was growing up in Red Hook projects and how his step father’s relationship with Mary J. Blige, Daddy Kane, & Big Pun shaped his music career. Explained why his first rap battle at 7yrs was a sign that he was born to be a rapper. Kris Kassanova also elaborated on why he can relate to ASAP Rocky when ASAP said, “An artist can’t be shit without his producer.”

After a recent explosion of underground talent along the West Coast and Bay area, the success of Black Hippy/T.D.E. label mate Kendrick Lamar, and arguably verse of the year on ASAP Rocky’s “Brand New Guy,” it’s safe to say that all eyes and ears are set on Schoolboy Q now in 2012. On the day of its release, Habits and Contradictions reached #1 on the iTunes album chart and marked the Compton native’s second full-length album to crack Billboard’s top 200. Active members of the hip-hop community wasted no time to show their support of HnC when it dropped on midnight last Saturday, but did Schoolboy’s project ultimately live up to the hype?…

The album opens with a prayer. Our narrator openly kneels before God while reflecting on his troubled past and struggles for survival. After a lifetime of broken promises and destructive habits he desperately calls out for both protection and forgiveness. His faith is disrupted. Not only does he doubt his words will ever reach their destination, but also questions
his ability to change thinking forward to what sins the coming night may hold. The music fades,the prayer ends, and so does the first track of Habits and Contradictions.

“They say clean your hands before you eat, rise our sins with praise… But I done did some things I don’t think I could ever wash away.” – Sacrilegious

HnC takes listeners on a cryptic ride through the complex mind of Schoolboy Q. What begins as a dark and twisted reflection of his scarred past, soon evolves into acceptance of the demons that plague him. Tracks like “Oxy Music,” “Nightmare on Figg St,” and “Druggys Wit Hoes Again” represent those old habits constantly referred to throughout this project. Pills, weed, heroin, sex, money, jealousy, and murder are just a handful of topics that contribute to the overall troubled theme of the album.

What Schoolboy lacks in topic variety, he makes up for in emotional range. While HnC contains a majority of dark highly drug-infused tracks, there are a few exceptions. Smooth tracks like “My Hatin’ Joint” and “Grooveline Pt. 1” provide a necessary break in tone and energy. Strong features from A$AP Rocky, Curren$y, Dom Kennedy, and Kendrick Lamar add substance to the tracks they are present on and successfully contribute to the project’s lyrical depth. The final song on HnC is in my opinion the most influential. “Blessed” represents the last stage in Schoolboy Q’s appreciation for his life experiences. The hook urges those caught in the struggle to keep the faith and stay strong. Q reflects on a close friend losing a son and is frustrated by his loss for comforting words but understands you can’t escape hard times, you can only embrace life and carry on.

Habits and Contradictions is a powerful, carefully organized, and thought provoking project in its entirety. If ignorant trap music is what you’re looking for, than this is not the download for you. Schoolboy Q is as intelligent as he is raw and it reflects completely throughout this album. Final Grade: 90%

Standout tracks include Sacrilegious, Oxy Music, My Hatin’ Joint, Hands on the Wheel, Grooveline Pt. 1, and Blessed.

We got a chance to catch up with Gerard Brown III, writer of legendary hip-hop film “Juice”. Talk about an honor!

Brown spoke about how the project and how it got a kick in the industry. He told us all about how rapper Tupac Shakur caught the lead roll and offered his sincere advice for those looking to prosper in the entertainment industry. Brown also confessed a “Woosahh-I’ve-got-to-stay-calm” moment of his whenever nearing the end of the film.
