We’ve talked about moving your cache files to a RAM disk to speed things up, but it turns out Firefox has this feature built in. Here’s how to turn it on.

Since your computer can access data in RAM faster than on a hard drive, moving cached data to RAM can improve your page load times. In Firefox, all you need to do to move your caches to RAM is open up about:config and make a few tweaks.

Once you get into about:config, type browser.cache into the filter bar at the top. Find browser.cache.disk.enable and set it to false by double clicking on it. You’ll then want to set browser.cache.memory.enable to true (mine seemed to already be set as such), and create a new preference by right clicking anywhere, hitting New, and choosing Integer. Call the preference browser.cache.memory.capacity and hit OK. In the next window, type in the number of kilobytes you want to assign to the cache (for example, typing 100000 would create a cache of 100,000 kilobytes or 100 megabytes). A value of -1 will tell Firefox to dynamically determine the cache size depending on how much RAM you have.

This tip isn’t brand new, but it is something we didn’t know about, so if you’re looking to eke a bit more speed out of Firefox (and who isn’t?) this should give your page loading speeds a little boost. You can check up on your memory cache activity by typing about:cache in the address bar. Just to be clear, the Boom Dock from Homade doesn’t involve any batteries, which means it’s not exactly going to bring the noise. This is a baby rat in a minuscule harness somewhere in Tanzania. He’s got his nose in the air, but he’s not looking for cheese. He’s actually sniffing out deadly landmines.

It takes a pair of trained humans a full day to clear a 2000 square foot minefield. But if they work with a pair of rats, they can do it in just two hours. That’s why APOPO, a Dutch organization working in Tanzania, is training baby rats to become mine-sniffers that are as effective as they are adorable. They’re more efficient to train than dogs, and they’ve already proven their stuff in neighboring Mozambique, where they’ve successfully cleared patches of land.

The rats start their training when they’re just four weeks old, early enough for them to overcome their natural fear of humans. They’re conditioned to associate a clicking sound with a food treat, and then trained to distinguish the scent of TNT. When they correctly identify explosives in tests, the click is sounded and they’re rewarded with a bit of banana. After some nine months of rigorous daily training, the sniffer rats are ready for work in the field.

The rodents are also being used to help screen samples for tuberculosis in Tanzanian hospitals, where lab tests are often only 60% accurate. In the future, members of APOPO explain, rats could be used to sniff out narcotics or locate people trapped after catastrophes. It’s just like that old book If You Give a Mouse a Cookie: If you train a mouse save lives by sniffing out mines, he’ll want to learn how to save lives in a whole bunch of other really impressive and adorable ways, too. Jobs may’ve once called the iPhone a “computer for your pocket,” but when it’s docked to a computer keyboard it’s more of a computer for your keyboard for your computer. If you catch my drift.

The WOWKeys keyboard is from Omnio,and has actually been Apple-certified so you can dock (and charge) with the quiet knowledge that Apple approves of you. Just like with ASUS’ Eee Keyboard, the iPhone acts as a computer, so when the keyboard is connected to a Mac or PC by USB, it can be used as a trackpad, numberpad or remote. The keyboard has 15 keys dedicated to iPhone use as well, so you can skip songs, increase brightness and volume and so on.

You will of course need an iPhone to take full advantage of the WOWKeys keyboard, but unless it goes on sale outside of Korea, your hot little fingers won’t be caressing the $105 slab anytime soon.

Just like last year, Google is paying the Wi-Fi of all passengers flying with AirTran Airways, Delta, and Virgin America. From November 20 to January 2, 2011, all domestic flights will have free Gogo Inflight Wi-Fi. [via gizmodo]
