Before we get into anything sports related we have to talk about one of the worst outbursts of violence the world has seen since 9/11. On Friday November 13, 2015 the city of Paris was attacked by members of ISIS, the extremist terrorist group, killing 129 innocent people, wounding 352, and leaving millions disgusted. The chaos started when a bomb outside Stade de France, the soccer stadium that was hosting an international friendly between France and Germany, was triggered. Two restaurants, Rue Alibert and Rue Bichat , were then under attack by masked gunman who killed 15 people in their assault and wounded another ten.
About five minutes after the attack at the restaurants a second bomb at Stade de France went off. Shootings throughout the streets ensued in this time, with attackers sprinting through the streets with assault rifles, slaughtering innocent civilians. The final act of the attack took place at the Bataclan, a concert venue downtown. The theater was taken hostage by the attackers and 89 more lives are taken. Attacks finally came to an end three hours later when French police stormed Bataclan, killing all the attackers.
In the aftermath of these attacks expect heightened security at every major venue in every major city and expect the violence to only escalate from here. France has already responded by bombing ISIS sites in Raqqa, Syria. We can only hope this is the beginning of the end for one of the worst groups of people that inhibit this planet. But for now keep the people of Paris in your thoughts as they try and get over this heinous act.
Now,let’s get down to the good stuff. What an insane weekend of sports that includes Ronda Rousey losing her air of invincibility. See why and what else went down this week in this edition of Sporting*Goods.
