Justin Timberlake took home the Innovator Award this past Sunday, March 29, at the 2015 iHeartRadio Music Awards. In his acceptance speech he shared with the audience that his road to becoming seen as an innovator did not come without its share of obstacles.

The “Suit & Tie” singer was introduced by fashion designer Tom Ford and a video montage of his works, including artists like Taylor Swift and Timbaland praising him for his talents.

In his speech, Justin addressed many different aspects of his road to success. For example, did you know that Justin wasn’t always seen as innovative? Hard to believe, we know.

“Growing up in school, no one ever called me anything close to an innovator. They called me different, they called me weird.”

Good thing Justin didn’t let those words stick to him. He thanked his mother for teaching him that being different was okay.

Justin also left the audience with a few words of wisdom, which you can hear in the clip above. He also quoted lines from Steve Jobs’ commencement speech at Stanford University back in 2005. However, he saved his last thanks for his wife Jessica Biel, who was at their home watching.

“Lastly, you can’t have innovation without creation, so finally, I want to thank my best friend, my favorite collaborator — my wife, Jessica, who’s at home watching. Honey, I can’t wait to see our greatest creation yet. Don’t worry. Daddy’s headed home right now to innovate by learning how to change a poopy diaper and get my swaddle on.”
