Early this morning (Jan. 18), it was reported that A$AP Yams passed away at the age of 26. A$AP Bari broke the news on Twitter at 6:16 AM. He wrote “RIP Yams” and attached a picture of him and Yams. His record label, A$AP Mob, later confirmed the death with a tweet of their own.

Yams, real name Steven Rodriguez, was the heart and soul of the Mob, which he founded with fellow New Yorkers A$AP Bari and A$AP Illz in 2007. He grew up on the southern edge of Harlem and was the right hand man to lead rapper A$AP Rocky, who he met in 2008. With Yams’ wits and Rocky’s raps, the group took off by 2011 and signed a major label deal.

While his cause of death remains unknown, Yams was a heavy user of Codeine and Xanax. Even after his brief time in rehab last summer, it’s not exactly sure if he quit using. Ironically, his last tweet was about “lean.”

The picture below shows Rocky in the hospital waiting room.

A$AP Rocky, A$AP FergDrakeMac MillerTravi$ Scott and other fellow hip-hop artists took to Twitter to mourn the Mob founder.

RIP A$AP Yams.
