According to Rose, a bunch of her family members were M.I.A when it came to the couple’s big day. This wasn’t a result of missing invitations or anything on Rose’s part, but this was a choice of their own and for a very shocking reason.
The family refused to attend the wedding because Wiz is African American.
Colorism is something that Rose admits she is familiar with, when it comes to her family. It’s not something she is proud of and when we watch her interview on OWN’s special Light Girls, which premiere’s tonight (Jan. 19) at 9pm EST, we can see that it is difficult for the mother to talk about.
“With my family, they feel like they’re more superior or better than an African American because we’re Creole and we have culture and that’s something I battle with most of my life… It’s more of the older people in my family.”
Rose admits that this is something that still tremendously upsets her and even goes further to explain her father.
She later added:
“It’s such a sensitive subject that it’s hard to explain yourself without sounding mean or bitter or angry, but I am,” she shared. “I’m angry that my family is like that and they want to pass so bad that they raise my mom and my uncles and my aunts to not fully know their culture…Our younger generation, we’ve embraced it so much and I feel like that’s why my father is white.”
