The 2014 “MVP” Award For Lyricist Of The Year || The Ether Report

Award: MVP Lyricist Of The Year

Nominees: Wiki, Killer Mike, Mick Jenkins

Breakdown: BARS. No matter what image an artists presents or publicity stunt they try to pull, at the end of the day nobody is ending up in a real hip hop discussion without the bars. If 2014 had anything, it was a plethora of lyricists dropping some of the most jaw dropping verses you will ever here.

Wiki, the frontman of NYC based rap group Ratking will be a surprise to some, but once you get a wiff of how he bends words and brings them together you’ll recognize that he may be one of the most talented spitters out right now. Killer Mike‘s name popping up in this category will be no surprise to anyone with ears who listened to Run The Jewels 2. Mick Jenkins gave us strokes of genius with the pen throughout the year, mainly on the acclaimed mixtape The Water[s]. So effortless, yet so intricate we’re still catching new lines that flew over our head to this day.

Winner: Mick Jenkins

Honorable Mention: Royce Da 5’9, J. Cole, Big K.R.I.T, Freddie Gibbs, Ab Soul, Vince Staples)
