The 2014 “Can’t Believe The Hype” Award || The Ether Report

Award: Can’t Believe The Hype

Nominees: Lecrae, Bobby Shmurda, Iggy Azalea

Breakdown: If 2014 was anything, it was the year of miscellaneous artists shining everywhere. Bobby Shmurda, Iggy Azalea, Lecrae – keep it real, you didn’see any of these names popping up on your Spotify let alone popping period, but that’s why we love this genre. They’ve kept their names ringing throughout the year, but who is really here to stay?

Iggy Azalea‘s name hasn’t left the headlines ever since she exploded onto the scene, but it remains to be seen if she can perform when the smoke from “Fancy” and all of the controversy clears. The true God MC, Christian Hip Hop artist Lecrae released Anomaly and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, but we’re not sure if this more mainstream friendly lane is a the right route for him or not. Then there is Bobby Shmurda. We’d like to point out that our decision was made before his arrest, but with all the hype surrounding his name we can only recall two to three songs by the guy, including “Hot Nigga.” We’re going to need a little more than that before we buy into this one.

Winner: Bobby Shmurda

Honorable Mentions: ILoveMakonnen, O.T. Genasis, OG Maco, Raury, Logic, DJ Mustard, Dej Loaf, Joey Bada$$
