The name Azealia Banks is very popular nowadays in the world of social media. Many media outlets have clung to her statements on Twitter directed at Iggy Azalea and T.I. , yet have ignored the rest of her political and social views.

In an passionate interview with Hot 97‘s Ebro, Rosenberg and Laura Styles, Azealia Banks sets the record straight on a number of issues including her upbringing, influences, thoughts toward Iggy Azalea, T.I. and Black Culture in America. On a socio-political level, Banks expressed, that America’s favorite rappers keep getting whiter. She used Azalea’s Grammy nominations for Best Rap Album and Macklemore’s success last year as examples and cried as she described how she feared these things were contributing to the demise of hip-hop’s blackness.

“When they give these Grammys out, all it says to white kids is ‘You’re amazing, you’re great, you can do anything you put your mind to, and all it says to Black kids is ‘You don’t have shit, you don’t own shit, not even the shit you created for yourself.’ And it makes me upset.”

Azealia Banks comes from humble beginnings. In this interview she recounts her love for dominicans, how hard her mother used to work, her job at Starbucks, and her drive to get her music out there. She recalls being discovered by Diplo and described the rest as history. But despite her humble beginnings, Banks has come to be labeled as the “angry black women,” when in reality she is simply a 23 year old artist that is more passionate about political and social issues than other artists.

“That Iggy Azalea shit is not better than any black girl rapping today…The Grammy Awards are supposed to be given out for artistic excellence and Iggy Azalea is not excellent.”

Ebro had some personal advice for Ms. Banks which was that she should put her passion in her music and  not social media so people will listen to the messages in her music. But, as we all know, Azealia Banks is a free spirit that does not have any desire to conform to political correct ways of conducting her speech and expression. If she has an issue she’s is going to express it the way she sees best. She is a 23 year old artist, with alot to say and I love hearing it all.

Azealia Banks debut studio album Broke With Expensive Taste dropped on November 6th.
