Al Lindstrom and Complex TV have gathered for their annual round table discussion on the topic of The 2014 Hip Hop Rookie of the Year Award.

Nominees included Bobby Shmurda, who took the rap game by storm with his single “Hot Ni***”, Young Thug who has been continuously dropping one hot project after another, Dej Loaf who has come onto the scene as a female rap force to be reckoned with, and YG who dropped his first debut album in 2014. Complex TV member, B.Dot, even reached to nominate Iggy Azalea as a candidate.  There was much debate about what really connotated a “rookie”…one song, a mixtape or an album. Charlamagne was skeptical of nominating Bobby Shmurda or Dej Loaf because they have not released a “full body of work” like YG. When the six votes were tallied, we ended with three for Bobby Shmurda, two for YG, and one for Iggy Azalea…and the winner is Bobby Shmurda. The Complex TV team stated that this time last year “nobody saw Bobby Shmurda coming” and in a year’s time he was able to create one of the biggest records of 2014 and develop a huge fan base.

Congrats to the young rapper like Bobby, making their footprint known early in the game.
