Normally I don’t watch television on Saturdays, unless it’s Sports related. However, last night Kendrick Lamar appeared on Saturday Night Live as the musical guest and stared in one of the skits called “Young Tarts & Old Farts.” The skit was about new musical acts paired with older more seasoned veterans, a funny skit with some hit or miss combos (you be the judge).
Kendrick’s first performance was an energetic live rendition of his single “i” which was backed by the live band and featured background vocals that will remind you of a church choir. Kendrick raps with so much energy that his stage presence can be felt through the television screen. It has me wondering why the CDQ version of the track doesn’t bring as much fire. All in all, the performance made me like the song so much more.
During his second performance, Kendrick brought out TDE label mate Jay Rock which I thought was a dope move; Jay Rock needs more shine. The fans have been begging for new music from Jay. I had hoped before the show even came on that Kendrick would perform Jay Rock’s single, only because “i” has already been performed live a number of times during Kendrick’s current promotional run. Kendrick and Jay Rock were joined on stage by Chantal and during this performance Kendrick rocked a hat which covered up his highly talked about new hairstyle.
Watch the performances above and the skit below. The album is coming soon!
