Catherine Zeta-Jones Will Play Drug "Queenpin" Griselda Blanco in "The Godmother"

Move over “The Godfather,” make room for the ladies. Academy Award-winning actress Catherine Zeta-Jones is slated to portray Columbian drug lord Griselda Blanco in an upcoming film titled “The Godmother,” directed by Norwegian filmmaker Eva Sørhaug.

Griselda Blanco was a former prostitute who rose within the ranks of Colombia’s Medellin drug cartel to eventually serve as drug lord in the ’70s and ’80s. Nicknamed “The Cocaine Godmother,” Blanco is considered a pioneer in the cocaine drug trade and underworld Blanco during Miami’s “cocaine cowboys” era. Known for her viciousness and violence, Blancco also allegedly ordered dozens of drug-related murders during this era. After serving 18 years in prison, Blanco was deported to Colombia, where she was gunned down by motorcycle-riding assassins in 2012.

Who knows if the film will be able to compete with classic crime dramas like “Scarface,” “The Untouchables,” and of course “The Godfather,” but we will certainly like to see it try.

The film will begin shooting early next year.
