Roger Goodell is laying down the law this week. First Josh Gordon’s one year ban held up, then he raises the punishment for domestic violence and now Aldon Smith’s nine game suspension is upheld. The league office turned down Smith’s appeal today for his multiple off the field issues and multiple violations of the league’s substance abuse policy and personal conduct policy.
Smith is receiving four games for the substance-abuse violation and five for the personal conduct violation. Now the 49ers will be without one of the two best pass rushers in the game for half the season. Fortunately for Smith and the 49ers he will still be allowed into the team’s facilities and attend team meeting during the suspension. With linebacker Navarro Bowman already out for half the season following that ACL tear in the NFC Championship Game the first half of the season just became a lot tougher.
The team hopes Smith learned his lesson and will use this time to refocus on things. In 43 career games Smith has 42 sacks. That’s tough to replace, but if any team can handle the loss it is this 49ers team. Aside from their rivals the Seattle Seahawks the 49ers are the NFL’ s deepest team. Their going to need to show their depth if they plan on being around late in the season.
