I still remember Danny Almonte. It was 2001 and the Paulino Little League All-Stars from the Bronx were in the Little League World Series. This was big for me not just because I was from the Bronx, but because this was around the same time I was playing Little League baseball. Seeing kids from my area play on ESPN was the coolest thing to me. Seeing Danny Almonte was crazy too. It seemed like he would never be touched.Every batter seemed helpless at the plate against him. It seemed like he would go on and pitch the Bronx to the LLWS Title and play for the Yankees.
Then Sports Illustrated launched an investigation. Then the truth came out. Almonte was 14 years old when he was pitching in the LLWS. The age limit was 12 years old. The Paulino Little League received a ban from Little League competition and had all its LLWS wins removed. Grantland retells this story as the 2014 LLWS kicks off today in its latest installment of its exceptional 30 for 30 Shorts Series.
