Sherman Hemsley, best known for his role as George Jefferson on The Jeffersons, has died at 74 in his home in El Paso, Texas, police say.

Hemsley acted on stage before going onto the the big screen. He made his Broadway debut as Gitlow in “Purlie.” He found sitcom stardom playing Archie Bunker’s African-American neighbor in “All in the Family.” He also played Deacon Ernest Frye on TV’s Amen and was a professional singer.

Reasons for his death have not yet been confirmed. Hemsley had no wife or kids.
